Despite having more free time than ever before – we all need convenience. Our busy lives get busier as our choices grow. The day our regular dining choice shifted from the table to the car, so did our menu requirement. Sadly, that meant our attention to detail shifted, convenience overtook nutrition and quality, and our understanding of its kickback on the planet went with it.
Plastic trays and chillers have made for heavy use of our energy resources, the effects of which are often hidden from view and greenwashed to help us justify our use.
It’s time we called time on fridges and put the power back in our cupboard!
Porcus Meal in a Jar is an ambient meat based meal that doesn’t compromise nutritional quality but allows you the freedom of convenience at your convenience.
With a 12-month shelf life, infinitely recyclable packaging and ingredients embracing the local and circular economy principles, we are happy to say our food tastes amazing and literally won’t cost the earth!
Our meal is cooked in the jar, at pressure, which means we trap the nutrients in. It’s called retorting and it’s a process used in many cultures and locations. This allows a vacuum to form that doesn’t allow bacteria in – hence it stays as an ambient product, safe, until you need that ‘convenient’ meal sometime in your busy lives.
The jar is infinitely recyclable and we are always happy if you find away to return your jar in return for points towards a new jar of flavoursome goodness. That said, if you are too far away from our small farm, just recycle in your council system. It just might find its way back to us somehow!
Porcus Meal in a Jar means you can live without a fridge, or certainly a much smaller one than has become the norm. Before the dawn of the ‘cold box’ we put everything into our larder or cupboard. It worked for us then - but as our choices grew and food was flown in from around the globe, and out of season, we became reliant on our fridge.

The future is uncertain but we can assure ourselves of some things; things that nourish us, the animals whose lives ensure ours can thrive.
Small changes: Eat less meat, and when you do, vitally, check that the provenance is true. Don’t fall for pretty graphics or websites full of Brady Bunch teams. (At Porcus, we do wash our faces before having our pictures taken but only because our mums would kill us otherwise). Buy local, ask to see where it is grown, real farmers are proud of their farms and will happily show you their hard work. Use cheaper cuts of meat to help your budget; by buying different cuts, the whole animal gets utilised – not just the breast as with some chickens and the rest discarded.
Small changes make the world a bigger place. It’s our world, the only one we have to live in – so don’t grumble – change it or accept that all we will be getting is small change.
There is no greatness in asking what’s in it for you if you can’t imagine giving that much back and more.
During the winter months, the shop will be open
FRIDAY & SATURDAY 10 am – 4 pm
On every small farm in the UK we are now entering the ‘Doom Months’ – January, February & March keep us on our toes, good and proper! The weather is a battle; the animals need more food and extra straw to sleep cosy and warm. The (wo)man hours required for all this is immense. This doubles and triples costs and where food comes from is the last thing on people’s minds – this means fewer of our real farms make it each year!
HOW YOU CAN HELP A SMALL FARM SURVIVE?
Christmas has been and gone for another year – and we hope you all feasted well and shared quality time with friends and loved ones. We had a great Christmas, on the farm, and were extremely grateful for all the orders and support from our customers, friends and family.
Thank you one and all!
Now we have a small ask…….Please don’t forget us !
During these winter months, we need you more than ever to keep placing orders so we can keep the ‘cogs’ turning. You are always welcome to come up to the farm to collect , but if you could give us a heads up on what you fancy it will allow us a bit more time to process your order.
We can then make just what you ask for, minimising food waste, keeping our costs down and making sure you get exactly the Porcus Goodies what you want!
Please be safe – if we get bad weather our farm may be cut off – so please call us before you travel, and we’ll give you an update – your safety is our priority!
THANK YOU FROM ALL OF US AT PORCUS FOR YOUR ONGOING SUPPORT. IT IS MUCH NEEDED AND TRULY APPRECIATED!
